I want to be me!

Dear Miss Nish,

Hi Miss Nish. I was wondering, well my style is very 80s and just big like my personality. I am sometimes scared to show that at school because I’m scared of what other people might think about it. I always wear it on the weekends, but school is different. Everyone at my school only wears Aeropostale,Hollister,American Eagle, and Abercrombie. I want to just be myself. What should I do?

Thanks!

Hello sweetheart!

I love seeing some of the fashions teens wear today because it is straight from the eighties when I was a teen! We wore skinny jeans, colored jeans, geek glasses, neon colors, everything 80’s! That was such a fun time with fashion because everyone had the freedom to express themselves and really step out of the box.

My dear you sound fabulous! I commend you for having your own sense of style and realizing you do not want to look like everyone else. Sounds like you just need a little encouragement to step out of the box and really be you! The first question you have to ask yourself is “What are you afraid of?” Is it what your friends will say? If they are really truly your friends – don’t you think they will admire your style? Give them a chance! They like you already don’t they? Think about this – what is the worst thing that will happen? Honestly? Maybe someone will have a comment but so what? At the end of the day you like what you like. That is why we were created differently! One of the worst things you can start doing is living your life to please other people. Guess what – you can’t! What is the point of pleasing every one but not being pleased with yourself? So you might as well live your life in a way that is respectful to others and true to you!

Why not start out slowly? An accessory here or a neon color there? This will make you comfortable and allow your friends to slowly see the new you emerging. Before you know it your own style will shine through and I bet you will love it! Who knows – your courage might inspire others to step out of looking like everyone else and show their own style also!

Stay true!
